Looks like the free ride on TMobile’s cheapo GPRS/EDGE network for WAP is over. Of course this inevitably happens right after I drop a bunch of bank on a sweet new EDGE/WiFi phone for it. I’m considering looking into moving to prepaid and using Skype or Gizmo
over WiFi for the majority of my calling. However, I don’t think T-Mobile (or anyone) has a good prepaid+unlimited EDGE plan. Still, I’m psyched to be moving up to a nice device. The Howard Forums wiki has a few clever ideas on how to get around this stuff, particularly since all the POP/SPOP/IMAP/SMTP (aka email) ports are wide open.
Update: I’m using something (akin to, but not identical to) this — plus a something like a port-knock sequence:
nylon -vf -a ‘208.54.0.0/17 216.155.160.0/20 208.54.128.0/19 66.94.0.0/19‘ -p 465 -i eth0 -I eth0
(You have to be root to listen on port 465!)
