Interesting Developments with Microformats from Mozilla and Microsoft

I picked up on this over at Microformatique, Mozilla Labs have released a Firefox extension called Operator with wide support for common Microformats and integration with the regular Web 2.0 pantheon of Flickr, Upcoming.org, etc.

I wonder how long before we see a parody of the RSS icon? It’s very exciting and but the thing that I hadn’t noticed before was preliminary support for Ray Ozzie’s proposal, dubbed “Live Clipboard” to move towards a microformat and other common format-based clipboard architecture to allow copy and pasting all kinds of data between different sites, applications, etc. He seems to have some pull within Microsoft, so this idea might have some momentum building.

The only issue I have with the proposal is the someone annoying requirement to build the web clip’s data in JavaScript, rather than inline in XML. It may be necessary to use JavaScript to support this on current browsers, but I’d like to see this able to support automated user agents. I hope I read the implementation details closely enough; it is definitely a work in progress!

This reminds me; I need to setup my blog for rel-tags!

FYI, I’ve posted more information about my inclusion of Live Clipboard in Operator on my blog.

FYI, the Javascript building of the web clip data is an implementation detail that Microsoft chose. For Operator, I just put the entire microformat on the Live Clipboard as is and it works fine.
